The 3-wheel motorcycle knowledge exam consists of 25 multiple-choice questions specific to 3-wheel motorcycles and traffic safety laws.  Applicants must answer at least 20 questions correctly to pass the exam.

Applicants who successfully pass the knowledge test will receive a pink colored carbon copy of their test which may be taken to the DOL to apply for their learning permit.

In order to obtain an endorsement applicants must also pass a skills test within 180 days and have received their green colored test receipt.  Applicants must take both test receipts (green and pink) to the DOL to apply for their endorsement.

Motorcycle Skills Testing

You must provide a 2-wheel or 3-wheel motorcycle for the skills testing. The vehicle must be in safe operating condition. During testing you must wear a DOT-approved helmet and eye protection at a MINIMUM. You will not be permitted to test if it is deemed that your vehicle is not in safe operating condition and/or you do not have an appropriate helmet and eye protection.

The motorcycle skills test measures your ability to operate a motorcycle legally and safely.  It consists of exercises such as low speed maneuvering and normal stopping, turning and curves, emergency swerving and braking.  Demonstrations for the skills test can be found on the WA DOL web site.

Applicants who successfully pass the skills test will receive a green colored carbon copy of their test form.

In order to obtain an endorsement applicants must also pass a knowledge test within 180 days and have received their pink colored test receipt.  Applicants must take both test receipts (green and pink) to the DOL to apply for their endorsement.

Car Knowledge and Skills Testing

The car knowledge test consists of 40 multiple-choice questions about traffic safety laws.  Applicants must answer at least 32 questions correctly to pass the test.

The skills testing will test the applicant's ability to drive legally and safely.  Applicants must have passed a written test within 2 years prior to doing a skills test.  Applicants must provide their own vehicle to use for skills test and it must meet all Testing Vehicle Requirements, see next section. Applicants must pass the skills test with a score of least 80%.

An applicant's test scores will be entered into the DOL database within 24 hours. Applicants will have to visit a DOL office to apply for a license.

Passing the knowledge and skills tests does not guarantee that an applicant will be issued a driver license. The DOL will determine if an applicant has met all licensing requirements.

If an applicant is under the age of 18: they must be at least 16 years old, successfully complete a traffic safety education course, have had a learning permit for at least 6 months, and have had 50 hours driving experience with at least 10 night driving hours prior to applying for a drivers license.

The DOL reserves the right to conduct random re-examinations. Applicants refusing to take a re-examination may have their license revoked.
